About The Next Shelter

I’m Andrew. I built The Next Shelter to help plan my own Appalachian Trail section hikes, and I’m sharing it with other hikers who might find it useful.

A place to put your hike together

Choose your start and finish points, add overnight stops, and see how your plan breaks down by day. Explore the route on the map and elevation profile, compare daily mileage and approximate ascent, and download a GPX file or print your itinerary.

You can plan as a guest. Create an account to save your hikes and track completed sections, or share a read-only trip link with someone else.

Current trail coverage

The planner currently covers the trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia through North Carolina and Tennessee to the Tennessee–Virginia boundary. Its name is The Next Shelter, but your overnight plans can include listed campsites and custom overnight locations where the planner allows them.

Mileage, hiking times, elevation and overnight markers are planning estimates. Check current trail conditions, access and camping requirements before heading out.
